Hens and chicks are mat-forming succulents native to Europe and Africa and appear in the form of rosettes. The mother rosettes are the “hens” and the smaller rosettes that emerge from them are the “chicks”. As a low-growing perennial, hens and chicks quickly spread to 2 feet or more in width by manual propagation or self-propagation. Although usually grown for their interesting shape and succulent leaves (which are usually red, green, blue, gold, or copper), hens and chicks sometimes flower on a tall stem.
This hardy succulent is very easy to grow and does especially well in rock gardens and in containers. You can leave the plants close together or take the chicks out and replant them to start their own families.
Adding succulents to your home, help keep your air fresh and free of environmental toxins.
